Understanding Primary Care Teamwork in Context: Implications for HIT Design (UPTIC)

Overview: In response to NRC, this research works to improve EHR design. It involves designing EHRs that support the cognitive work of clinicians to overcome the twin issues of sluggish EHR adoption and failed EHR achievement. This research focuses on primary care because of its high utilization, high complexity, and current efforts to redesign it using the patient-centered medical home model. This project is working to develop new EHR interfaces that can support and extend clinician and team cognitive work, thereby improving patient outcomes.

Aims: The specific aims of this project are to:

  • Identify the cognitive work requirements of primary care clinicians and teams.
  • Develop and test specific EHR interface design requirements.

Methods: This research applies goal-directed task analysis to map cognitive requirements of clinicians and clinical teams. Mapping these requirements helps create a better EHR interface design.
