On July 29, 2014 the Center for Quality and Productivity Improvement offered a half-day symposium in University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Engineering Hall. The event commemorated the ten-year anniversary of CQPI’s SEIPS Short Course on Human Factors Engineering and Patient Safety. Over 70 people from a variety of healthcare, academic and engineering backgrounds attended the symposium. Dean Ian M. Robertson, PhD, welcomed those in attendance and noted the clearly expressed recommendations in 2005 and 2013 by joint National Academy for Engineering/Institute of Medicine committees that systems and human factors engineering principles be applied to healthcare.

CQPI Director Pascale Carayon, PhD, Procter and Gamble Bascom Professor in Total Quality, Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering provided an overview of the research and educational efforts of CQPI-SEIPS since its initial funding in 2001. Shawna J. Perry, MD, FACEP, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, University of Florida/Jacksonville then gave the keynote address “Embracing Complexity: Emerging issues in Healthcare and HFE” in which she presented the healthcare challenges and opportunities facing human factors engineers and HFE research. The formal program concluded with an interactive panel discussion comprised of experts in HFE and healthcare: Caprice Greenberg, MD, MPH; Barbara King, RN, PhD; Mary Sesto, PT, PhD; Tosha B. Wetterneck, MD, MS; Douglas Wiegmann, PhD.

Following the program, attendees mingled in the Engineering Hall lobby and viewed a number of posters that summarized various research projects in HFE and patient safety conducted at UW-Madison.

Since its first grant in patient safety was awarded in 2001, CQPI/SEIPS has received over $10 million in research funding.
